Week 8 | Nanotechnology + Art

This week's topic has been very eye-opening and interesting to read about and observe. This topic really shows the relationship between nanotechnology and art, and how this relationship can develop amazing works of art that viewers would be mesmerized by. The material that helped me best understand this topic were the lectures, TED talks, and the articles that we were assigned to read. From these materials, I learned that the relationship between nanotechnology and art has caused artists and scientists to work together, bringing science and art closer together. This amazing type of art is helping to close the divide between the two cultures, by encouraging collaboration between researchers and artists.

Nanotechart is helping to familiarize people with the nano world and it teaches people more about nanotechnology. Nanotechnology can be a very complex topic that not many people can understand or visualize, but this relationship between nontechnology and art gives people a visual way to understand nanotechnology.

I have learned about some very interesting examples of nanotechnology, and one example is the artwork by Boo Chapple who used the bone matrix to cause bones to vibrate in a way to generate sound.

Another form of nanotechnology and art is Nano_Essence which is an interactive experience in which the viewers interface with the visual and sonic presentation through their own breath. Nanotechnology and art could seem like two very different fields that would never cross paths, but there is a wide array of fascinating pieces of artwork that reveal the captivating relationship between nanotechnology and art.

  1. Hi Bailey! I also really enjoyed learning about the collaboration between nanotech and art this week, especially looking at all the beautiful art pieces that bring the two together! I am so intrigued by your mention of Nano_Essence! That seems like an amazing way to really understand nanotechnology in such a physical and interactive way! Is the exhibition all about understanding the nanoparticles behind our breath?

  2. Hi Bailey, I really enjoyed reading your blog! I thought the artwork by Boo Chapple was really interesting because it shows how nanotechnology (and biotechnology) can be used to create unique nonvisual artistic experiences. Also, the figures you used really helped capture the intersection that art and nanotech have.
